Lithium Battery Installation Standards for Caravans and RVs

At Offroad Living, we are committed to providing you with the information you need to ensure your lithium battery installations are compliant with Australian and New Zealand standards. Recent updates to the AS/NZS 3001.2:2022 standards are designed to improve the safety and reliability of electrical installations in “Grid connectable" caravans, campervans, and other recreational vehicles (RVs).  Here, we break down the key requirements and how they apply to lithium battery installations.  It is important to note that if your vehicle is not able to be connected to grid or generator power through and inlet socket on the exterior of your vehicle, this standard does not apply.

Overview of the Standards

The AS/NZS 3001.2:2022 standard specifies the requirements for electrical installations in electrical connectable vehicles and RVs. This includes:

  1. Safe Installation Practices: Ensuring all electrical components, including lithium batteries, solar, chargers and inverters are installed properly.
  2. Protection Against Electric Shock: Proper earthing, circuit protection, and fault detection mechanisms must be in place.
  3. Battery Placement: Guidelines on secure mounting and ventilation for batteries to prevent hazards.
  4. Cable and Connection Requirements: Standards for the type and size of cables, connectors, and fuses.
  5. Energy Efficiency: Recommendations for systems to maximize energy efficiency while meeting safety requirements.

Why the New Standards Matter

The updates to AS/NZS 3001.2:2022 reflect the growing adoption of lithium batteries in RVs. Lithium batteries offer numerous advantages, such as higher energy density, faster charging, significantly lighter weight and longer lifespans compared to traditional lead-acid batteries. However, they also require specific installation practices to ensure safety and compliance.

Key Requirements for Lithium Battery Installations

  1. Competent Installation:
    • Lithium battery installations should be carried out by a competent person as defined by local state and territory regulations.
    • Verification and testing must be completed by a person deemed competent in accordance with these regulations.
  2. Battery Mounting and Ventilation:
    • Lithium batteries must be securely mounted to prevent movement during transit.
    • Adequate and compliant ventilation must be provided.
  3. Electrical Protection:
    • Installation of appropriate fuses and circuit breakers is mandatory.
    • The system must include Residual Current Devices (RCDs) and circuit protection on AC power installations to prevent electric shock and overcurrent.
  4. Cable Management:
    • Use appropriately sized cables to handle the current loads and overcome voltage drop of the system.
    • Ensure cables are routed and protected to prevent damage, wear, and potential short circuits.
  5. Earthing and Bonding:
    • Proper earthing of the system is critical to prevent electric shocks.
    • Ensure metallic components are bonded to the vehicle’s chassis for safety.
  6. Battery Management Systems (BMS):
    • Lithium batteries must have a built-in or external BMS to monitor and regulate charge/discharge cycles.
    • The BMS should include under and over-temperature, overcharge/over-discharge and low/high-voltage cut-off protection.
    • All AllSpark lithium batteries are fully compliant with these standards with active cell balancing, plus short circuit and reverse polarity protection aswell

Caravan-Specific Considerations

  • 240V AC Systems: If your RV includes 230V AC power (e.g., grid or inverter systems), compliance with additional standards, such as proper earthing and double-pole switching, is required.
  • Solar Integration: Ensure solar panels, charge controllers, and inverters are installed in compliance with AS/NZS 3001.2:2022 and manufacturer guidelines.  This includes solar double pole DC isolation on the PV side of the solar controller and DC circuit protection on the battery side.  Solar arrays with aluminium framed panels in excess of 60V DC shall also have solar panel frames earth bonded to the vehicle.
  • Inspection and Testing: Regular testing of your electrical system is essential to maintain compliance and functionality. This includes periodic inspections of connections, cables, and protective devices.
